Artist Statement

 Title: Pretty Girl

My piece depicts a portrait of a close up, beautiful woman, with long dark hair, and very defined cheek bones. The most obvious element I used was value. The most obvious principle I used is contrast.

To create this piece I mapped out where everything was. I then shaded my dark values, and created my highlights. I most importantly created contrast and value in my piece.

My inspiration for this piece was the prettiness of this woman and how defined her face is. I love the concentration of her eyes. The emotion I tried to convey was seriousness and focused.

My goal as an artist was to make the piece look as realistic and defined as the picture of the woman is. I did not reach my goal because I need more practice on my shading.

By creating this piece I learned more techniques on hair, shading, eyes, lips, and highlighting. Overall I do like my piece because even though it doesn't look exactly like the picture I know I tried. I will use what I learned on this piece for future works because I know it will help me learn how to make my pieces better.

Title: Cruelty Free

This piece depicts a horse. It has a harness on the face. It has a close up view on the horses face. The title of this piece is "cruelty free" to represent that animals have feelings too. The society today uses all kinds of animal to test out human products. Especially the makeup industry.

This piece was created using pen and ink. I used 3 different techniques to make my piece look 3D. First I sketched out my ideas in 4 different compositions. Then I used The Rule Of Thirds to find the right one. After I experimented with different techniques on a bigger sketch. I started my final piece by adding pen and adjusting the line quality to define the form. I used texture to help create value on my piece.

My childhood dream has always been to have a barn in my backyard when I get older. With lots of animals, most importantly horses. My work is a reminder that animals should be treated just like humans. And not like test bunny. I believe that animals are humans to, just in a different form.

My goal for this piece was to use contour lines and different values to make my horse look 3D. I reached my goal and I am proud of my work. Practicing different techniques and contour lines in my sketch book definitely helped me achieve my goal. If I didn't do this, I don't  believe I would have achieved my goal.

I learned a lot during this project. Like how to use values and cross contour lines to make and art work better. I also learned how to adjust line quality and add texture with pen and ink. The final piece was exactly how i imagined it. I will most definitely use what I learned in this project in future works.

Title: Sunset Sky

My piece depicts some mountains over looking a stream. The sky is a early sunset, the mountains depicts the color of the sunset. The colors in my sky move the viewers eyes around my piece.

I used a combination of techniques I learned through out doing my project to achieve my goal. I first sketched out my drawing with a light pencil. I did not complete my goal just yet. After several layers of under painting I completed my back, mid, and fore ground. I did not get to my details, but I will finish before the semester is over.

My art work is a meaning of my strong love for nature and the mountains. Nature has always made me feel calm and relaxed.

My goal as an artist is to use the techniques that I have learned in this piece, in others I plan to do in future references. I have not finished my piece due to absences.

I learned a jumble of different techniques during this project, wet on wet, wet on dry, and using masking fluid to help build values. My final piece is not here yet but I believe it will turn out just how I want it too. I think if I take more time to concentrate on finishing my piece, it would be really beautiful.
